From Ang Bayan: NPA Unit Thwarts Attack By AFP Troops In Negros Occidental Province

A unit of the New People’s Army (NPA)-Northern Negros repelled attacking forces from the 79th IB on March 18 in Barangay General Luna, Toboso, Negros Occidental Province. The Red fighters initially reported that they managed to fire first from a favorable position against the 79th IB.

The firefight lasted for five minutes and the NPA unit retreated safely. The 79th IB unit was reportedly disorganized and failed to immediately fire back at the Red fighters. The NPA-Northern Negros estimates many casualties on the enemy soldiers. The 79th IB only reported three soldiers wounded in the battle.

The NPA refuted the 79th IB’s claim that the NPA unit left behind some of its weapons and military equipment in the battle. According to the NPA-Northern Negros, the unit withdraw will all military equipment intact and morale remains high.

Meanwhile, the 79th IB and local government forcibly evacuated 412 residents or 122 families who they say were affected by the few minutes of gunfire. The forced evacuation disrupted the daily activities and livelihoods of the residents. Classes for students in Barangay General Luna and neighboring Barangay Tabun-ac were also suspended.
