Odisha police staging fake surrenders: CPI (Maoist) district secretary
MALKANGIRI: At a time when the police claim that the Maoists are on the back-foot as they have lost public support, the rebels have levelled a charge against the district police.
CPI(Maoist) Malkangiri division committee secretary Punam Chandar, in a release on Thursday, alleged that the district police have picked up innocent villagers to surrender before the cameras.
During the last two months, police have nabbed innocent villagers from different panchayats of Kalimela block branding them as Maoists and later, the incident was orchestrated as ‘surrender’ for getting publicity, he wrote.
The Maoist leader said on the direction of the police, at least five to 10 persons of each village are being threatened to come to Malkangiri headquarters every month to share information. Those who refuse to obey the orders are being falsely implicated.
The incident has created a sense of fear in Kalimela area, he added.
Alleging that 35-year old Waga Kabasi, a resident of Marigata village in Badigeta panchayat under Kalimela block, was picked up by the police on February 21, he said police are yet to produce him in the court while his whereabouts are not known. They demanded that the district police should produce Waga alias Raju in the court soon.
