Days after release, Maoist ideologue Kobad Ghandy arrested by Jharkhand police

Revolutionary writers association and Civil Liberties Committee (CLC) have condemned the arrest of Kobad, terming it as “illegal detention.”

Days after his release from Visakhapatnam jail on bail, top Maoist ideologue Kobad Ghandy was arrested again on Saturday, this time by Jharkhand police in connection with another case pending in the state.

Ghandy, who got bail in five cases on Tuesday, came to attend a trial at Junior First Class Magistrate Court in Achampet of Nagarkurnool district in Telangana in a case pertaining to a Maoists’ attack on Amrabad police station. He was charged with possessing and explosives to help the Maoists. The case has been pending since March 2010.

Soon after he came out of the court, the Jharkhand police took him into custody. They brought him to Hyderabad and produced him before the Nampally criminal courts to produce the transit warrant from a Bokaro court. After obtaining court permission, they took Ghandy to Bokaro, where he has been facing a case of 2007.

In all, there were eight cases against him. But, he was acquitted in three cases. He was to appear before another court in Bellampalli of Mancherial district of Telangana on December 20 and after that he was planning to go back to his native city Mumbai.
