CPP Statement: US-Orchestrated Ukraine Strikes In Russia Escalate War And Threaten Wider Conflict

The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) condemns in the strongest terms the imperialist US government for further escalating the war in Ukraine when it ordered last week the use of Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMs) supplied by the US to strike deep into Russia.
The order, veiled in the euphemism of “authorizing” the use of US weapons, was swiftly carried out by the Zelensky government when it fired at least six long-range missiles against a military facility in the Bryansk region, more than 110 kilometers within the Russian territory. Russia claims to have intercepted five of the six missiles.
The following day, Ukraine fired a number of UK-supplied Storm Shadow (SCALP) long-range missiles which struck Russia’s Kurtsk region. The UK had also previously been “authorized” by the US to permit Ukraine to use the SCALP shadows. Also on November 20, the Biden government approved Ukraine’s use of anti-personnel land mines, weapons banned under the Ottawa Treaty.
The US-orchestrated missile strikes last November 19 and 20 prompted Russia to retaliate by firing its “Oreshnik” missiles, a medium-range multi-warhead hyper-sonic missile last November 21, which struck an industrial complex in Ukraine’s Dnipro region that was producing missiles. Military analysts believe that by launching the nuclear-capable Oreshnik missile with only a conventional warhead, Russia wanted only to demonstrate its capacity as a warning to the US against further escalation.
By directing Ukraine to carry out the missile strikes, the US imperialists revealed in no uncertain terms that the war in Ukraine is a proxy war that it is directing against its imperialist adversary Russia. The war obsession of the US imperialists is recklessly escalating the conflict in Ukraine and is increasing the risk of pulling more countries, including the US itself and its NATO allies, directly into the conflict.
The US continues to prolong the war and prevent a peaceful resolution by supplying Ukraine with weapons and directing it to strike Russia. The war in Ukraine has already caused widespread devastation and large numbers of deaths and injuries to the working class and people of Ukraine and Russia, who are being pushed to the front lines on both sides of the conflict.
The Party and the Filipino people express solidarity with their common desire for a peaceful resolution to be immediately put into place. Both sides must revisit the 2015 Minsk agreement (the Minsk II which was negotiated with the participation of Germany and France) which, among others, calls for recognition of the autonomy of the Donbass region, in order to allow the peaceful existence of Ukraine and Russia.
The Party calls on the peoples of the world to stand firm against the US imperialists for fueling the war in Ukraine, as well as in the Middle East, and for provoking armed conflicts in Asia, risking a more widespread conflagration that will bring immense suffering to peoples around the world.
