CPN Announces Protest Programs Following The Issue Of Arrest Warrants For Chand And Other Party Leaders

Kathmandu, December 5, 2023: The Netra Bikram Chand led Communist Party of Nepal has announced that it will hold a series of protest programs against the Kathmandu District Court’s issuance of arrest warrants against its leaders.

The CPN’s announcement came in response to the recent issue of warrants targeting CPN General Secretary Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplav’ and other party leaders.

The District Court of Kathmandu’s issuance of arrest warrants for General Secretary Biplav, spokesperson Khadga Bahadur Bishwakarma, Politburo member Maila Lama, All Nepal Peasants’ Federation (Revolutionary) Chairman Raju Karki, and others has sparked controversy.

Among the cases filed against the CPN leadership was one filed on December 26, 2019, accusing them of jeopardizing the relations among federal units and various castes and communities, thereby committing an offense against the State.

Biplav claims that the issuing of the warrants directly violates a 3-point agreement his party signed with the government of Nepal on March 5, 2021.

Chand reiterated that among the agreed-upon points, one was the withdrawal of cases against his party’s members and the release of imprisoned cadres when the ban on the CPN was lifted.

Describing this action as an aggressive move against the peaceful initiatives aimed at resolving the country’s issues, the CPN’s statement strongly condemned the judge’s actions and urged an end to such divisive acts within the judicial system.

The CPN has announced a three-day series of protests against the arrest warrants starting today.

The outlined schedule of protests includes a torch procession today at 5:30 pm, the burning of the judge’s effigy on December 6, and a nationwide public demonstration on December 7 at 2 pm.
